Remote invigilation recording notice
Last updated: October 2026
Applies to your Level 1 module tests and the GQA health and safety test when you sit them online with an invigilator.
How the sitting works
A centre invigilator watches you live on a video call, using your camera and microphone. You can sit these tests on a computer or a phone. On a computer, you also share your entire screen with the invigilator. On a phone, the app tells the invigilator each time you leave it during the test. The invigilator checks your identity and your room, then lets you start the test in the app.
Purpose
We record the sitting so we can show the test was run properly, and so we can check what happened if there is a concern or an appeal. GQA may ask to see it.
What is recorded
- Your camera video and microphone audio
- On a computer, your entire screen
- From check-in until the end of the sitting
On a phone we do not record your screen. Instead, we note each time you leave the app during the test: when you left and how long you were away.
We do not store a separate photograph of your ID document in this process. The invigilator checks your ID on the live call.
Where it is kept
Recordings are stored privately in the UK or the EU. They are not public and have no public link.
Retention
Recordings are kept for 12 months after the assessment completes, then securely deleted, unless a legal hold applies (for example an investigation or appeal). This is the minimum GQA asks for.
Access
Recordings are confidential assessment data. Only authorised staff can view them. GQA may review a recording when checking how a sitting was conducted.
Your rights
Recording starts when you check in. If you do not want to be recorded, leave the sitting before the test starts. Any recording made up to that point is kept as assessment-integrity evidence under the retention rule above. For your wider data rights (access, erasure requests, complaints), see the main Privacy policy.
